Cooking

Cook dishes with a cooking kit, a cookbook and ingredients: where to buy them, the 60 dishes, the stat each gives for 20 minutes, and your chance to succeed.

Cooking
Food that makes you stronger.
Cooking turns ingredients into a dish. Eat it and you get +1 to +10 in one stat (STR, AGI, VIT, INT, DEX or LUK) for 20 minutes, plus a little HP or SP back. Anyone can cook: you buy a kit and a cookbook, collect the ingredients and use the kit. Better kits and more practice make a dish more likely to work.
Geneticists have their own cooking skill, Mix Cooking, with its own recipes. This page is about the kits and cookbooks everyone can use.

Cook a dish

  1. Buy a cooking kit and a cookbook from a Chef Assistant (the next two sections say which).
  2. Collect the ingredients of a dish from the cookbook's level (the dish tables below).
  3. Use the kit from your bag. A list opens with every dish you have the cookbook and ingredients for. The kit is used up as soon as you use it.
  4. Pick a dish. It works or it fails (the chance is below). On success the dish lands in your bag. On a fail you lose the ingredients and some Cooking mastery.
The cookbook is only checked: it stays in your bag, and you can cook as often as you have ingredients. Keep it with you whenever you cook. Any kit lets you cook any dish. A better kit only raises your chance.

Cookbooks 6 to 10 are very rare drops (a few hundredths of a percent). Until you find one, the dishes of that level are out of reach.

Ingredients

The Chef Assistants sell the basics every recipe needs: Bag of Grain (200 z), Fresh Fish (700 z), Bread (150 z), Edible Mushroom (40 z), Yellow Spice (750 z), Sweet Sauce (525 z), Savory Sauce (525 z), Spicy Sauce (525 z), Red Spice (750 z), Cooking Oil (375 z), Pot (375 z). Everything else drops from monsters (the dish tables list it).
The Old Frying Pan (needed for Fried Grasshopper Legs, Fried Monkey Tails and a few more) is not sold. It drops from
Magnolia

Elusive Magnolia
(100%).

Your chance to succeed

Each dish has a chance to work. It goes up with:
  • the kit (Outdoor +12%, Home +24%, Professional +36%, Royal +48%; the Fantastic Cooking Kit never fails),
  • your Base Level (+0.2% per level), your DEX (+0.2% per point) and your Cooking mastery (a random bonus, see below),
  • and it goes down with the dish level (-4% per level, so -4% to -40%), every kind of ingredient after the first (-5% each: a dish with 5 different ingredients loses 20%), your missing LUK (-0.1% per point below 100) and a small random loss of 1% to 4% every time.
Whatever the maths says, a dish always has at least a 0.01% chance.
Example: a character with Base Level 99, DEX 90 and LUK 50, no Cooking mastery. The numbers are the average chance of one try (worked out from the game's own formula, not measured), for the first dish of Level 1, 5 and 10:
KitFried Grasshopper Legs (3 ingredients)Mastela Fruit Wine (5 ingredients)Steamed Tongue (8 ingredients)
Outdoor Cooking Kit46%20%under 1%
Home Cooking Kit58%32%under 1%
Professional Cooking Kit70%44%9%
Royal Cooking Kit82%56%21%
Fantastic Cooking KitAlwaysAlwaysAlways
With a full 1,999 Cooking mastery the same character gets: Outdoor Cooking Kit 68% / 42% / 7%, Home Cooking Kit 80% / 54% / 19%, Professional Cooking Kit 92% / 66% / 31%, Royal Cooking Kit 100% / 78% / 43% (same three dishes).

Cooking mastery

Every character has a hidden Cooking mastery from 0 to 1,999. You cannot see it, but it decides how big the random bonus is:
MasteryRandom bonus
06% to 29%
40011% to 34%
80016% to 39%
1,20021% to 44%
1,60026% to 49%
1,99930% to 49%
A success adds mastery and a fail takes some away. The higher the dish level, the more it moves:
Dish level1-23-45-67-89-10
Success+5+10+20+40+80
Fail-1-5-10-20-40
So cheap Level 1 dishes teach you slowly. Reaching the top takes many Level 9 and 10 dishes.

The dishes

Each dish gives +N to one stat for 20 minutes, where N is the cookbook level, and heals the HP and SP shown. Ingredients are per dish.

The Cooking quest (a free start)

You do not need the quest, because the Chef Assistant sells the books and kits. It gives you a Level 1 cookbook and kits for free and lets you borrow cookbooks 2 to 5. It starts in the Prontera Castle kitchen.
  1. Talk to Charles Orleans . He only teaches you while you wear a Chef Hat, and not a Novice (the Vending Machine in Lutie makes one for 120 Piece of Cake, 1 White Dyestuffs, 330 Feather and 450 Dragon Scale). He picks one of the six Level 1 dishes by chance and names the ingredients. Bring them and he makes the dish with you.
  2. Madeleine Chu lends you a Level 1 Cookbook and gives you 10 Outdoor Cooking Kit.
  3. Cook all six Level 1 dishes yourself and hand one of each to Madeleine. She wraps them for her friend Chulsoo (the Servant in Payon, , near the water mill and the pub).
  4. Give Chulsoo the Bundle of Food, then go back to Madeleine for 10 Home Cooking Kit.
  5. Charles now lends you a cookbook of Level 1 to 5. You bring back the one you hold and give him 10 Pumpkin (Level 1), 5 Well Baked Cookie (Level 2), 5 Sushi (Level 3), 5 Bao (Level 4) or 10 Shoot (Level 5).
