The Utan chief: Visit the Utan Chief, Karkatan, in the chief's house (um_in, 39,122). He greets you and asks you to look around the village and learn how the Utans live before you come back. No requirements. The villagers speak Utan, so you only hear 'umba' from most of them until you learn the language.
Utan Chief: -
Ask for the language: Return to Karkatan and choose 'I want to learn Utan language.' Wear a mask first: Mr. Smile, Goblin Mask, Mr. Scream, Welding Mask, Gas Mask, Opera Masque or Opera Phantom Mask. Without one he sends you back to look around. With one he agrees and lists what he needs. The mask has to be equipped, not just in the bag.

Paper and ink: Bring Karkatan 10 Oil Paper, 5 Slick Paper, 1 Squid Ink and 1 Feather of Birds. He takes them and teaches you the Utan language. From now on you understand the villagers. The Utan language lesson is also what makes the Utan travellers on the airships talk plainly. Reward: Understanding of the Utan language.

The Shaman's hut: Find the Utan Shaman, Puchuchartan (um_in, 44,71). Her hut lies behind the locked Skeletal Gate at umbala 221,193: examine the skull and put a gemstone in each eye socket (Blue, Yellow or Red Gemstone, they roll back out). Odds: a gem in the left eye only 1 in 4, two gems of the same colour 1 in 2, two different colours 3 in 4; try again if it stays shut. Free some weight first. She tells you to ask the chief for his permission. Gate NPC: #Skulldoor at umbala 221,193. After step 7 the gate opens for you without the puzzle.

The chief's test: Talk to Karkatan again. He wants a mask as a gift, to show respect: bring him 1 Mr. Smile and hand it over. He confirms you to Puchuchartan. He keeps the Mr. Smile. If you forgot it, he repeats the request.

The Shaman agrees: Go back to Puchuchartan. She keeps her promise and offers her power. From now on she makes elemental stones and divides pure ones. Create: Horn x15 gives Green Live, Snail's Shell x20 gives Crystal Blue, Scorpion Tail x20 gives Red Blood, Rainbow Shell x25 gives Wind of Verdure; she asks for a number from 1 to 9 and one try in ten fails and leaves you a Garlet. Divide (up to 10 at a time): Great Nature, Mystic Frozen, Flame Heart or Rough Wind each give 6 to 10 of the matching essence. She needs 600 free weight. Reward: Elemental stone services.
