The man in the poor district: In the poor district of Lighthalzen, talk to Maku. He grumbles about the rich, says he once had a rich friend, and tells you to look at the upper town too.
Maku: -
Digotz in the upper town: From base level 50, find Digotz in the rich district. Ask him whether he knows someone called Maku: he calls Maku a jerk and quickly changes the subject.
Digotz: -
Back to Maku: Tell Maku you have met Digotz. He pretends not to care, then explains why the poor are kept out of the rich district.

Digotz's message: Go to Digotz again and say you have met Maku. He rants about a list of old grievances and asks you to carry a message to Maku, sentence by sentence.

Deliver it word for word: Tell Maku the message. The game asks you to type each sentence in order: 'Hopeless bastard!', 'You're still a stubborn jerk!', 'You owe me at least 3 lunches!', 'Not to mention an apology!', 'But who cares what you think?!', 'I'm so goddamn happy without you!'. Maku swears revenge; talk to him once more and he erupts in rage, then calms down. The outburst takes about half of your HP, so have your HP up before the second talk.

The answer: Tell Digotz what Maku said. He gets angry too and wishes their third friend, Benkaistein, were here, who would always make peace between them. He says Benkaistein studies somewhere with a lot of books.

The library in Yuno: Go to Yuno's library and find the Student who sits in the study room. Ask about Benkaistein: he is in the north part of the room. Joey Choryee is the student's name.

Benkaistein: Benkaistein is buried in a book. Call out to him three times (Excuse me, Hey, HEY YOU) until he looks up, then tell him about Maku and Digotz. He remembers a keepsake he wants to find. Keep some bag weight free (300) and room for one Knife: he refuses to talk with a full bag.

The sixth volume: Search the study room for the book Benkaistein lost, at (168,117): Benkaistein's Journal, Vol. 6 (item: Friend's Diary). The book is an invisible cell: walk onto (168,117) and talk to it.

The journal: Give the journal to Benkaistein. He asks you to hand it to Digotz and Maku: written when they were children, it should remind them how close they were.

Digotz reads the journal: Show the journal to Digotz. He reads it with growing embarrassment, remembers the wooden wings, the monster they fought, the oath, and decides to go and see Maku, even if he says he will beat him up. Choose 'Show Benkaistein's Journal' when he asks.

Maku reads the journal: Take the journal to Maku. He reads it and softens, and says he will meet Digotz when he comes. Reward: base EXP (70,000 above base level 90, 40,000 above 75, otherwise 20,000).

Digotz is late: Visit Digotz again. A man in a black suit stabbed him on his way to the poor district, and he dies after telling you he was wrong to be angry at his friends. Take the Knife from his body. Reward: 1 Knife.

Benkaistein's thanks: Go back to Benkaistein in Yuno and tell him how it ended. He thanks you and gives you a Pass that lets you go back and forth between the rich and poor districts. This step needs 300 free bag weight and room for one Knife. Reward: 1 Pass, base EXP (70,000 above base level 90, 40,000 above 75, otherwise 20,000).
